Oscar Shapiro won the District of Columbia Championship periodically between the 1940s and the 1990s.
Upon his death on January 1, 2002, the D.C. Chess League named this tournament for him until someone matches his record.
Players do not need to be residents of the District to play. This is an open tournament so anybody may enter.
Five Sections: All prizes guaranteed in all sections
Open Section 1st place $500, 2nd $300, 3rd $200; 1st place under 2200: $150, 2nd $100;
The title of DC Champion and a trophy goes to the top DC resident. 4-Round Swiss System with time control 40/2, SD/1.
Rounds at 11:30am & 6:00pm Saturday, 11:00am & 5:00pm on Sunday. Registration from 10:00–11:00am.
Entry Fee: $48 if sent by October 11, $55 at the door.
Amateur Section (Under 2000) 1st place $300, 2nd $200, 3rd $100; 1st place under 1800: $150,
2nd $100. The title of DC Amateur Champion and a trophy goes to the top DC resident.
5-Round Swiss System with time control 30/90, SD/1. Rounds at 9:30 am, 2:45 & 8:00 pm Saturday, 11:00am &
4:30pm on Sunday. Registration from 8:00–9:00am. Entry Fee: $43 if sent by October 11, $50 at the door.
Reserve Section (Under 1600) 1st place $300, 2nd $200, 3rd $100; 1st place under 1400: $150, 2nd
$100. 5-Round Swiss System with time control 30/90, SD/1. Rounds at 9:30am, 2:45 & 8:00 pm Saturday, 11:00am &
4:30pm on Sunday. Registration from 8:00–9:00am. Entry Fee: $43 if sent by October 11, $50 at the door.
Booster Section (Under 1200) 1st place $50, trophies and medallions to top 15.
4-Round Swiss System with time control Game/45 Rounds at 1:30pm, 4:00, 6:30, & 8:00pm Saturday.
Registration from noon to 1:00pm. Entry Fee: $13 if sent by October 11, $20 at the door.
Beginner Section (For children under age 12 without a rating or with a rating under 800)
Trophies and medallions to top 15. 4-Round Swiss System with time control Game/30 Rounds at
1:30 pm, 2:45, 4:00, & 5:15 pm Saturday.
Registration from noon to 1:00pm. Entry Fee: $13 if sent by October 11, $20 at the door.
- Free parking at site. Use the Colonial Parking garage under the U.S. Chess
Center with the entrance on 15th Street, not M Street.
- Used book sale on site in addition to the good
selection of new books and equipment in the Center/'s Gift Shop
- Please bring your own chess equipment. The tournament does not provide any.
